    I once watched a …
I once watched a docudrama that played it when MLK was killed, I think it was also the song they played in Malcomb X when he was killed.

    I really enjoyed …
I really enjoyed Adam’s version and disagree that one must be black to authentically rock this song…after all, Whitney rocked songs written by Dolly Parton as did Dionne Warwick songs written by Bacharach. Soul is soul. Interpretation is what counts. But …there is another GREAT version everyone will agree is brilliant. Playing for Change – musicians around the world on YouTube. Clarence Bekker/Grandpa Elliott. Look for it, you won’t be sorry. Best version since Sam. Thank me later :)

    Reggie, I so hate …
Reggie, I so hate to have to correct you on this gorgeous song (one of my all-time favourites), but you didn’t grow up in those times, are too young to have known that Sam Cooke wrote it in 1963, was killed in December 1964, so how could it be about Dr.Martin Luther King Jr’s assination on April 4,1968? It was taken as a Civil Rights anthem later, after Sam’s death, but it wasn’t written ABOUT Dr. King. I’m glad it’s being sung again now as an anthem for necessary change.

You know a song is …
You know a song is great when individuals like Jon Bon Jovi and Bob Dylan sing it. I do believe Sam Cooke would be proud if he was alive today.

  • DrogbaXLampardXrule:

you dont have to be …
you dont have to be black to sing this many other people were oppressed when they came to america practicaly anyone who was an immigrant

    That’s fine by me, …
That’s fine by me, go check out Sam Cookes version and then compare. This just sounds fake to me, as you may realise I am not a fan :)

  • katmac75:

    I suppose it all …
I suppose it all comes down to taste, something that can’t be accounted for. I’m struggling to think which Bon Jovi songs are about bubble gum, & I also missed the law that says a musician must never change genre, or mature. Sounds a bit oppressive, & goes against the sentiment of the song, eg: judging by looks, pre-conceived ideas & pigeon holing people for life, ironic really. I’ll agree to differ if that’s cool with you. Kat :-)

  • katmac75:

    Jon’s talent …
Jon’s talent transcends genre, but I disagree with commenting on skin colour in. It’s about the American Dream & yes, obviously about the oppression of many races. Jon’s antecedents are immigrants who struggled with racism when they moved to the US, I know Italian Catholics treatment was poles apart from the state sanctioned suffering of African Americans, but he’s seen enough racism/sectarianism to understand the poignant, raw passion,& emotion behind this amazing song. Good comment tho’. :-)

  • gabonicabitis:

    Lol, katmac I have …
Lol, katmac I have rather a large musical knowledge thanks, this is a dire version.

  • katmac75:

    Sows how small & …
Sows how small & blinkered your musical knowledge is.

  • katmac75:

    He is awesome, not …
He is awesome, not many, esp rock singers can pull off Sam Cook. Thanks for posting, cheered me up. :-)

  • gabonicabitis:

    How can this god …
How can this god awful teen band think of covering such an awesome classic. Pathetic version, and something to be ashamed of, they should stick to singing about bubblegum nonsense.

  • dfarmbrough:

    It’s a reasonable …
It’s a reasonable cover, but doesn’t match the passion of Sam Cooke’s original. Jon Bongiovi looks much better with his hair cut though!

  • DiegoLaSombra:

    Little Richard …
Little Richard played the piano in the first JBJ solo record. He said a lot of times that Otis redding could have sung This ain“t a love song much better than himself.
